Book 1 Post 1
If I was given this assignment three years ago, I probably would not have chosen to read In My Skin: My Life On and Off the Basketball Court by Brittney Griner and Sue Hovey. Three years ago, the only thing I knew about Brittney Griner is that she believes she could beat Demarcus Cousins in 1v1 basketball game. Outside of that, I knew absolutely nothing about her. Honestly, I did not even care. I did not care that she was one of the best players in the WNBA. I did not care that she was one of the most prominent dunkers in WNBA history. All of that changed in February of 2022. Suddenly, she was all over the news as she got detained in Russia. I found myself constantly checking for updates about Brittney for the next 10 months. However, I realized I never learned about Brittney Griner prior to her detainment, so when the opportunity showed itself in Professor Hansen's writ 340 class, I took it.
In My Skin was published April 8, 2014 --much before her detainment. Therefore, the book has been revitalizing for me so far because I have been able to learn about Brittney's impact and fame before I knew about her. She was dominant. She was one of the best 2 way players in the WNBA. She was one of the few players at the time that could dunk at their leisure. Additionally, she did not get any worse on the other side of the ball. She was a wall on defense as she would constantly block other players as they drive to the basket. So far, this is what I have gotten to learn from the book so far. I have learned about her many achievements on the court. As I continue to read the book, I am excited to learn about her trials and tribulations off the court.
