USC Athletics Marketing Internship Final Draft
USC Marketing Intern
I love working with a team. If there is one thing I know about myself, it is that I always prefer interacting with others over being alone. The enjoyment of working with others has made me want to join the marketing industry.
A marketer handles promoting and selling their products or services. Thus, a team of marketers must also understand the need of their consumers. By doing so, they can connect with them in the most efficient way possible. The job requires continuous interaction between the consumer and seller. If the team does not constantly communicate with each other, they will not reach their goal.
Three descriptions that describe the duties of a marketer are:
· Interpreter
· Strategist
· Entertainer
I will describe how these aspects come into play in the life of a marketer below:
Interpreter
A marketer must interpret how consumers react to certain things. For example, our goal is to get students and fans to all USC athletic events. However, it is harder to get fans to a basketball game than a football game. A marketer needs to see this problem and find a way to fix it. For example, we know fans and students love USC gear, so we give out thousands of USC merchandise at basketball games in order to get people there.
Strategist
A marketer must also find the best way to implement their plans. This involves a lot of planning and coming up with a clear strategy. At USC, we complete this task by deciding which games to give away certain items. At bigger games, such as USC vs UCLA, it is easier to get fans excited. However, for smaller games, we promote more interesting giveaway items. For example, we give away USC Christmas sweaters during winter games.
Entertainer
Finally, a marketer must make the product or service look interesting. Marketers use promotions to gain and maintain consumers attention. For example, in USC athletics, we make sure all our games and events look fun and exciting. We complete this task through many aspects like hosting celebrities at the games. Additionally, we are responsible for selecting students and fans to participate in our halftime events. Fans enjoy watching their peers compete for prizes with hopes of being selected for the next event.

Hey Brandon, I love that you enjoyed your internship and found it beneficial to learn consumer analytics. Teams are such an important structure of marketing and I enjoy working in that group setting as well. I have yet to go to a game, but now that I know, I'll be on the look out for those free apparel games.
ReplyDeleteHey Brandon, I can definitely agree that marketing is no easy job. The team really has to get to know their audience and who they are catering to. This might not be the easiest thing at USC since it's such a mix of different people in for example when you are trying to promote a specific product. It does sound like you were able to learn a lot from this experience. Good luck if you plan to pursue a job in this field in the future!
ReplyDeleteHi Brandon, it is so cool you got to intern for USC Athletics! I'm sure that through being a student you had valuable insight to provide to your team. It is a big job being in charge of making content that caters to students who have a lot going on in their lives.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciated all the examples you gave. You brought up a concept and then adequately helped us understand how that is implemented in your job. It seems like a really cool opportunity to be behind the scenes and use your knowledge of audience engagement to determine how to best convince students to show up to the games.
